Dzongu – the only village in Sikkim that still retains the essence of Lepcha culture. You can reach this dream destination by car from Gangtok. Just 70 km by road from Gangtok and Dzongu is waiting for you with everything. Dzongu is located in the north-western part of Sikkim and Dzongu altitude varies from 3,000 ft and 20,000 ft above sea level. It takes a special permit to reach Dzongu village. The Lepcha community still preserves their culture in this village. The Lepcha community is a native of Sikkim. That’s why no matter where you go in Sikkim if you don’t go to Dzongu, the real Sikkim will remain elusive.
Generous nature, waterfalls, a sacred lake, the sky-scraping form of Kanchenjunga, the green forest, the smiling face of Lepcha and pure Lepcha cuisine – this is what Dzongu is all about. So reach Gangtok in the morning and go out on the way to Dzongu. Come and stay at one of the home-stays. Then turn to Lingthem. Rediscover Kanchenjunga by climbing the steep hills of Lingthem. At the same time, take a look at the green of the tree and the blue of the water. Come back and taste the Lepcha food!
On the second day, have breakfast and walk around the Tholung Monastery on a bamboo bridge over the Tholung Chu River. Take a warm bath. Ligzya falls on the way. Spent some times here and move towards the destination. This trek will take approx five hours. Back to homestay in the afternoon.
On the third-day start journey for Kesung. There is a beautiful lake waiting for you along the way. The water of that lake is so clear that it can be seen clearly up to the bottom. Look at that clarity with your eyes, you will see the blossoming forest welcoming you. Butterflies are circling around without any fear. A soft carpet of flowers is also spread on the soles of the feet. Where is such an indescribable beauty in the crowded tourist spot of Sikkim?
On the fourth day, you will be a little upset! Today is the day to return to your home. Therefore, the old way again – from Dzongu to Gangtok, from Gangtok to New Jalpaiguri, from there to your own home! This tour can give you relief from the fatigue of the whole year!
How to Reach Dzongu.
Take the train to New Jalpaiguri. From there you can take a car directly to Dzongu. Or you can come to Dzongu by car from the Lingthem stand of Gangtok. In that case, the rent will be less.
You can visit Dzongu throughout the year. But the best time would be from February to June. During these months the Dzongu weather remains cool and pleasant and you can also sight a number of birds.

Rice is also the main food of Lepchas. There will be fresh vegetables from Dzongu village. They add very little oil to the food, so most of the cooking is either boiled or roasted! But, very tasty! Permit Information for Dzongu.
Dzongu is a Lepcha Reserve Area and anyone who is not of Lepcha community requires a permit to enter Dzongu village. The permit can be obtained from Mangan DC office or contact with homestay owner. He can arrange the permit for you.
